The second week of Yahoo’s Fantasy Baseball covered games between Monday, April 8 to Sunday, April 14, 2019. It is the first time in team history that we finished with a 10-0 victory, and the first time we sit in the first place. (Except for a few weeks in Fantasy Football, this is the first time I’ve personally ever managed a team that has sat in the first place.)
Ondskans Imperium only made one transaction during the week. On April 11 we dropped Kolten Wong (2B – St. Louis) because his hot start came to a crashing halt when he went 0 for 13 over a four-game span. As a New York Yankees fan, I knew that DJ LeMahieu (INF – Yankees) had hit safely in all but three games so far. He hasn’t produced eye-popping numbers, but the guy has multiple-hit games and gets on base. He is currently patrolling one of our utility positions.
Matchup and Scores
Ondskans Imperium took on Yankees in week two and won convincingly, pitching a shut out. As you can see from the daily box scores, the victory was never in question. It was a battle for home runs and pitching wins all week, but the guys came through on Sunday and took back both categories for the sweep.
Standings and Team Stats
Some people may point out we just beat up the last-place team in the league, but anyone can see that only four category wins separate second place from ninth place. It will be a dog fight throughout the summer as teams battle for one of the top four playoff spots.
As far as team statistics go, we are right where we are supposed to be, but there is still room for improvements. We want to be rank number one in all pitching categories, but except for wins, we are in the top three. Batting Average is the only batting category we want to win every week, so it makes sense that we are ranked in the bottom of everything else. Outside of the runs category, we really don’t have a shot at climbing the charts in home runs, RBIs, or stolen bases.
Where the Matchup is Won and Loss: The Bench Players
Our bench has run out of space for everyday players who actually play. This week the injuries piled up and occupied the majority of our available space. Billy Hamilton (OF – Kansas City) is out for a while with a knee injury after crashing into the wall attempting to make a catch. Nick Castellanos (OF – Detroit) has a toe injury and has been off the field most of the week. Scooter Gennett is still on the disabled list and is like eight weeks from returning.
Meanwhile, he has company now because Arodys Vizcaino (RP – Atlanta) has right shoulder inflammation. There is no timetable for his return. Weather factored into a few players getting bumped out of the starting line up, but as you can see below, we didn’t leave many points on the bench.
As of today, April 15th, Ondskans Imperium has one roster space available. There were two people we were interested in, and one got claimed off waivers on Friday morning, and the other was picked up as a free agent on Saturday.
Players: Best and Worse
Best Hitter: Nick Markakis (OF – Atlanta) had the best week of all the hitters by scoring 15 points for the team. He collected 6 R / 2 HR / 7 RBI / 0 SB and batted 0.409. He scored the same amount of points as Mike Moustakas (INF – Milwaukee) but had a higher batting average.
Worse Hitter: Castellanos scored only one point and batted 0.111, but he spent most of the week injured, so for someone who was in the line up every day, Ender Inciarte was by far the worse. His numbers were terrible, 0 R / 0 HR / 0 RBI / 1 SB with a 0.118 batting average.
Best Pitcher: Justin Verlander (SP – Houston) won the top honours. He collected a win and struck out 17, his ERA was 3.00 ERA, and his WHIP was 0.92.
Worse Pitcher: It is hard to find a pitcher who didn’t contribute much to the scoring, but this honour fell to Edwin Diaz (RP – New York Mets). He only collected one save and struck out five. His ERA ballooned up to 4.50, and his WHIP was 2.00. These are not the type of numbers the Mets had hoped for when they signed one of the premier closers in the league.
Stay tuned for next’s week recap of the Ondskan Imperium 2019 Fantasy Baseball season.
