Top of the Rock completed their 2019-20 regular season with an 8-1-1 drubbing at the hands of playoff-bound Hanz&Franz.
After starting the season undefeated through four weeks, The Rock went a miserable 2-12-2 after that to finish the season as 6-12-2 team.
MATCHUP AND SCORES
In a complete reversal of fortunes from the previous week, Top of the Rock found themselves on the wrong end of a beat down.
Our only category win came curiosity of our penalty minutes again (17-10), and our only tie came in shutouts (1-1).
After that, it was indeed down the hill from there. Goals were lost by four, assists by eight, power-play points by three, shots on goal by four, and wins by one.
After posting a +30 rating in the previous week, we finished a poultry -5 this week, which was a combined 19 points worse than our opponents. Our goalies couldn’t match their calibre of play, losing 2.03-3.09 in goals-against average and 0.933-0.875 in save percentage.
It is clear to see that the guys prematurely celebrated great times to come after their mercy killing in the previous week. Roles were reversed in this matchup, one we never had in except for a strong showing on Thursday.
STANDINGS & TEAM STATS
To keep you guys coming back for more clicks on the blog, we will save all the end of the season numbers for a different post. For now, we will just point out that despite all the planning and mock drafts and strategies we wanted to roll with this season, we ended up an even worse team than the 2018-19 team.
We finished in 11th place last season while notching a better record of 78-97-25 (0.453). As you can see from above, we were 71-103-26 record for a 0.420 winning percentage. That’s a 33 percentage point drop for those of you keeping track at home. We also dropped 13 points in the standings, 181-168.
In terms of transactions, we made half the moves this year, 32-16, then we did last year.
As we mentioned before, we will break down our team stats in much more detail at a later date, but for now, here are our final team stats for the regular season. Not much changed except we dropped two spots in shots on goals, to finish in third.
If we were going to win any awards this season, it would definitely be the ruthless award, since we lead the league in penalty minutes pretty much from start to finish.
BENCH PLAYERS
The original idea behind keeping track of bench players was to see how many points we left off the score sheet. We always like to talk about missed opportunities, since they can make or break your matchups.
Most of the time, the numbers we don’t add every week don’t affect much since we always get pounded across the board.
Just for fun, we want to point out that 13 missed shots on goal could have given us another category win, thus making the final score 8-2-1.
STUDS & DUDS
Best Player – Ryan Strome – New York Rangers – 23 points
Worse Player: Brock Nelson – New York Islanders – 4 points
