Canyon of Heroes headed into the second to last week of the regular season with no hopes of making the playoffs. All the guys had left to play for was pride and to be a spoiler. Since MP was several spots lower in the standings, this 5-5-2 matchup was just about bragging rights.
MATCHUP AND SCORES
After a week that saw us clean sweep the goalie categories, we came up a little empty-handed in week 20, collecting only one point instead of four. Only one win separated us, while they produced better numbers in goals against 2.69-3.37 and save percentage 0.914-0.902. One of the category ties was in shutouts, where neither team earned one.
Both teams managed to score 20 points, the other category tie in the matchup. The teams swapped goals and assists totals (12-8 and 8-12) to get to 20. We managed to collect five extra power-play points (rare win) while losing game-winning goals by four. Shots were heavily favoured for us 89-54 while hits were much closer 39-25.
The worse stat of the week was our -12 plus/minus rating, which was 22 points worse than their +10 rating.
The daily scores were split right down the middle. For the first three days, MP held the lead before we rebounded on Thursday and held the lead heading into Sunday.
STANDINGS
There may be 14 teams in our league, but only the top six make the playoffs while the bottom eight teams get to hit the golf courses early. We trail the eight seed by 11 points, with one week left to play. If we had anything to play for, it would be to remain in ninth place and not lose any ground to Warriors of Chaos.
BENCH PLAYERS & TEAM STATS
We haven’t compiled a spreadsheet to keep track of our weekly bench totals, but if memory serves right, this is the first week of the season where we left zeroes across the board.
When you rank as one of the worse offensive teams in the league, there isn’t much wiggle room. But, if you continuously roll out the best goalies in the league, you definitely have more to lose in those categories.
STUDS & DUDS
Best Player – Mika Zibanejad – New York Rangers – 28 points
Worse Player: Jacob Trouba – New York Rangers – 7 points
